Tokyo – New City, Old Friends

Day 2 in Tokyo presented an opportunity to pack in as much exploration as possible. I admit to minimal preparation before the trip, having a rough list of desired destinations but lacking detailed planning.

Sensō-ji Temple and Arakusa Shrine

A key destination that "has too be seen to be truly apprecited" is the Sensō-ji Temple and Arakusa Shrine. Arriving early on a calm Sunday morning via the Arakusa Station subway, I experienced the area before crowds gathered. The incense smell and towering structures created an awe-inspiring atmosphere.

Rating: "5 Incense sticks out of 5. There's lots to see in Tokyo, but if there's anything you see in Tokyo, make it this."

Location: North of Arakusa Station

Unexpected Reunion

After an hour exploring, I spotted a tall bearded man who resembled a university friend. This turned out to be exactly that friend, accompanied by another university friend and his girlfriend. Both had independently posted about Japan travel on Facebook but failed to coordinate the previous night due to subway navigation confusion. Their spontaneous meeting at the temple was described as "unreal."

The combined group continued exploring Tokyo together, discovering a small shrine with torii gates nestled among trees and a garden with a large pond.

Continuing the Adventure

The group enjoyed ramen before heading to the Meiji Shrine on the opposite side of downtown, indicating more exploration remained for the day.
