Hiking Myanmar – Day 2. Over the Mountains and through the Planes.
The second day of the hiking trek began without the chanting from nearby monasteries that had marked the first morning. We woke in a remote location with minimal infrastructure—only a few buildings and solar panels powering the modest hut.
After an early breakfast with our hosts, the group departed and began ascending to the ridgeline of an adjacent hill. Our guide pointed toward distant mountains on the horizon, barely visible through the atmospheric haze, identifying them as the day's destination.
The descent from the ridge revealed a dramatically different landscape—expansive fields and rice paddies stretching across the plains. Hours into the trek, we encountered a small village where we purchased handwoven scarves and traditional Burmese headwear from a woman working at a loom, accompanied by refreshing tea.
By midday, the intense heat forced the group to take shelter in an upper floor of an empty structure for lunch. We rested, hydrated, and explored the quiet village before continuing.
The afternoon brought encounters with ancient pagodas hidden within jungle vegetation, resembling scenes from adventure films. We then descended through rice terraces alongside a man singing while leading a horse downhill.
The final challenge was a substantial ridge requiring switchback navigation. Upon reaching the summit, the largest village of our two-day journey awaited us. After dinner and rest, we exhausted hikers retired as darkness fell.
