Bangkok to Myanmar

I arrived in Bangkok's Don Mueang airport facing an unexpected challenge: booking a domestic flight to Myanmar while the boarding process was underway. Last-minute research about the train route from Yangon to Bagan revealed safety concerns that prompted the costly flight change. Despite initial booking failures due to poor airport WiFi, the reservation eventually went through.

Upon landing in Yangon, I navigated Myanmar's visa process using an eVisa voucher, which involved minor documentation discrepancies that immigration officials assured would be "fine." The arrival revealed a country in transition, described as "where China meets India"—featuring the heavy smog, constant honking, and vibrant street life of South Asia.

A significant challenge proved to be currency management. Myanmar uses Kyat alongside US dollars, but only pristine USD bills are accepted. Credit cards and ATMs are unreliable, requiring travelers to bring sufficient cash beforehand. This created considerable stress requiring separate research.

In Yangon, I explored colonial architecture from British rule, wandering past century-old business signs and buildings that felt transported from London. Temple visits required purchasing a traditional longyi garment to meet dress codes.

Cultural immersion included street food experiences in Chinatown, where curry soup and samosas cost mere dollars. I also encountered a diverse community of locals and fellow travelers before departing for Bagan's ancient temples.
