Koyasan

Osaka lacks must-see attractions, so a friend's recommendation sent me to Koyasan, a mountain temple town requiring a two-hour train ride, cable car, and bus from Namba station.

A convenient 2-day pass covers transportation costs (around $7 for the return train reservation). The journey itself becomes an adventure as the train gets away from Osaka and begins to wind and climb through the mountains, offering character through older cable cars and trains.

I started at Okunoin-mae, hiking 20 minutes through a Buddhist cemetery. Moss-covered graves, weathered tombstones, and towering trees created an atmosphere reminiscent of adventure films. The hike culminates at the Mausoleum of Kobo Daishi, where the founder of Esoteric Buddhism was interred 12 centuries ago—a site so breathtaking I respectfully avoided photography despite the temptation.

The main route stretches between Daimon Gate and Okunoin-Mae, lined with upscale temples, rustic establishments, and hidden shrines down narrow alleyways. I hiked the entire length, noting river views and peaceful side paths away from crowds.

At Daimon Gate's western terminus, mountain vistas reward visitors on clear days. This quieter end contrasts with busier central areas.

Despite limited time—deciding the night before meant leaving after one day to catch a ferry—I accomplished a meaningful exploration and plan a temple stay visit in the future.
